Situated in St Helen’s Square is one of York’s finest Georgian townhouses – the Mansion House.
York Mansion House is a grand house fitting of a grand home; and it serves as the official residence of York’s Lord Mayor.

Completed in 1732, it has been modified and updated several times throughout its history. The iconic frontage of the building was updated by William Etty, one of York’s most famous sons. Etty was a famous nineteenth century artist, who was commemorated with a statue in the centre of Exhibition Square, directly in front of the York Art Gallery.

Like many historic buildings in York, it has gone through phases of disrepair. It was most recently restored in 1998 by the York Civic Trust, and exhibits a wide collection of silver, antique furniture and paintings.
The collection includes York’s great sword of state, dated 1416, which once belonged to the Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund. The York Guildhall is situated behind the Mansion House.
The Mansion House is open to the public most of the year, offering visitors a range of guided tours.
